Comment:

 The problem is really the time limit thing. If that was removed, it
 wouldn't be a problem with the captchas. (Which really can't be claimed to
 be an overkill, without knowing the amount of spam that would flood in
 without it...)

 Wordpress comes coupled with Akismet these days though, which really looks
 promising. I haven't yet had it through extensive testing though, but I
 *have* worked on porting the Akismet module for Drupal 5 to Drupal 6, so
 it'll hopefully come around one of these days. :) Anyway, what I meant to
 say with that, is that Akismet might prove more useful in filtering off
 and blocking spam, than captchas and time limiting.
