Is there a specific feature you're using in automake 1.9 that can 
justify requiring people to install automake 1.9? If we keep this 
requirement we will get a ton of support requests since 1.9 is not very 
common yet. Unless there is a compelling reason to require it, we 
should attempt to tweak the configs to work on as many platforms as 
possible.

Same here -- our other projects do not need this. Can we do without?
