Yeah, PostgreSQL's out-of-the-box config is pretty wimpy. I recommend
setting shared_buffers to total memory in K / 4 / 8,
effective_cache_size to total memory in K * .75, stats_row_level and
autovacuum to on, and autovacuum_vacuum_cost_delay to 15.

Hopefully shared memory is set large enough for that to work... :)
