Unfortunately, I think Ben hit the nail on the head when he said that
you'd missed the boat for MusicBrainz.
MusicIP is in fact the preferred solution at the moment, for the
following reasons:
1. Their stuff works and works well.
2. They host the services and we don't have to worry about it.
3. They have become an invaluable partner of the last year and just
supported MusicBrainz AGAIN. [0]
4. MusicIP is plan A AND plan B. Should something happen to MusicIP
or should they exit the fingerprinting business, they will give us
$10,000 and the software to operate our own fingerprint system.
So a new fingerprint system would:
1. Only be plan C
2. Would need to be debugged and matured, which is lots and lots of
work.
3. Not net MusicBrainz new features, except that we would be "more
free".
I believe SoC projects should work to bring NEW features to
MusicBrainz, rather than making non-core features "more free". Given
that, I am not going to support another fingerprinting project for SoC.
Sorry.
