Ratings would make a perfect complement to the collaborative  
filtering algorithm -- perfect way to accumulate more data to feed  
into the algorithm. If you don't look at genre info (which, as  
pointed out, we don't have) and instead consider adding a rating  
system that should help your proposal a lot, I would think.
