I don't think tagging should mean the end of the current subscription
system. It could be just another way of subscribing. For example, I'd
probably want to subscribe to anything related to Classical (given the
current volume of classical edits, it wouldn't be unreasonable), but
currently browsing MB for classical artists is difficult. I'd still
want to subscribe to other artists, but here my limited knowledge
would make me want to limit the scope of my subscriptions.

Of course, this would have to be carefully prepared. IMO, an artist
could have more than one tag. This would allow to use different levels
and this would allow to tag artists who are difficult to classify.

Robert,

I implicitly thought that you would apply tags to artists, but maybe
you thought also of releases?
