Yeah, the principle adapts easily to other kinds of interpretations 8)

Exactly.

I also talked about this in IRC a while ago (when I was making those
AR's), and at that point the consensus there favored variant 2, but it
was also based on one particular interpretation ofr "link to the
earliest" 8)
