I find myself skipping over these emails rather quickly when heated
debates like this build up. I have no idea where this argument is
going but perhaps we should all take a step back, relax, and ask
ourselves if this is really helping us get anywhere.
I will say that I (a post-secondary student and native English speaker
who considers himself to have a fairly strong grasp of the English
language) have *no* idea which dash/hyphen to use in classical
titles. I would venture that casual classical listeners also will not
be able to tell the difference between the various hyphens/dashes. If
we want to require a specific hyphen then that's fine by me if a) it's
not hard to educate people (ie, always use this one in classical
titles: –) or if we have people who do know how they work and are
ready to correct them.
