I agree with Lauri, things are a _lot_ easier to merge things together 
than try and pick through individual aspects and split things.  This was 
my reluctance to vote yes to the Panic!/Panic saga.  Depending how far 
away some sort of AR or multiple discography is obviously affects 
whether or not band names should be separate artists.  In a simple case 
(such as Panic), there's a definite date where the band name changes, 
but in many cases there isn't one.  It's cases such as these that (in 
the case of merging all official name variations) need a close eye and 
proper use of annotations to log what's what (similar to what happened 
before labels came along), which I'm not sure many editors do enough of, 
or pay attention to.  Briefly, I personally think it's better to leave a 
longer trail that can be merged together in the future than to squash 
everything in one big knotty mess, only to get in a bigger state when 
trying to undo everything.
