I'd just like to say, I was already quite uneasy about this part, but
didn't want
to hold up the otherwise quite simple RFV that was simply codifying the existing
guideline, even though I disagreed with it. The two issues are quite
separate, and
it works for me to deal with this separately.

The more I think about it, the more I come down to:

If the band has actual real albums, released during their active
recording career,
by the label they are actually signed to, it's reasonable for users
and listeners
who own those albums to expect to find them under the name printed on the cover.

On the other hand releases done by previous labels based on back
catalog, VA compilations,
compilations released post-career with names invented for marketing
purposes and the like,
users and listeners will be much less likely to be surprised to find
them under the
most correct artist name for the contents.

And that some familiarity with the artist (band or not) in question is
often required to distinguish
the two.

(I should note, this is also the argument that sways me that we should
keep Wendy/Walter Carlos
separate: Most of that catalog was reissued, but most of the reissues
are quite different in content
to the originals.)
