Firebird, in one sense, is very mature and stable, being based on InterBase,
that has been around for about 15 years.
http://www.ibphoenix.com/ibp_news_art2.html It has many users, some in
mission critical situations, for example Motorola used it to build 911
despatch systems for Police forces.

I haven't seen any speed comparisons recently. All I know is that everyone
who knows anything about databases seems to say take speed comparisons with
a pinch of salt - they are often fairly meaningless.

Ps. FireBird is quite well documented as it's previous incarnation -
Interbase 6. The best set is here:

You want the interbase 6.0 manuals. These contain most of the information
required, except a few new features added to FireBird only. All the
reference information is still correct.
