I can't recall ever seeing Volume X in parenthesis. 

I'm not sure if I have a real strong argument for either but I'm leaning
toward subtitle since the volume is just a counter and acts as a
distinguisher. I think where things get a little dicey is when we talk about
storing this information separately. If we store subtitles separately then
Volume information should probably be part of the title to again act as a
distinguisher.
