One thing that I can't get over with forums is having to open the site
to check them. I like that I can quickly see what's new on the ML just
by checking my mail. If there's a good solution to that, I'd be easily
persuaded to using the forums.
Similarly, the Ubuntu forums have a good setup (though I don't know
how they implemented it); they have the mailing list as a topic in the
forum: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=6. This would seem
to satisfy both sides. Also of note, something I didn't notice before:
RSS feeds for specific forum topics. Sweet! :)
Whaddya say?
