This in my mind is the biggest issue with forums but it's easily taken care
of with moderation and restraint by the community. The MB forums isn't a
community site for people to gather and shoot the shit like most forums,
it's a place to ask questions and get quick answers. Obviously there will
still be playful banter between members but that's healthy to keep the
animosity down; as long as it doesn't devolve into people filling the forum
with nonsense posts. But once again that's solved by self restraint in the
community, forum rules, and moderation.

Comparing the MB forums to last.fm, or a music fan site, isn't really a
proper comparison. Hydrogen Audio might be better but with a smaller,
closed, and more manageable community dedicated to one purpose.

Proof that serious discussions can be productive is the Collaboration thread
that cleaned up the Beatles. Considering that was a first run through that
was just kind of jumped into it was great; once people get used to the
process the second time through and later should be even better. The amount
of work done in such a short time is impressive by any standards, if the
forums could do the same thing for most long complicated style issues it
would be a huge bennefit.
