My ripping process involve ripping a number of CDs in a 'batch'. Then, when
I get time, I use my flactag utility to attempt to tag these ripped FLAC
files. I don't particularly want to be forced to rip and tag in one
operation (the ripping process takes a number of minutes, so I just put the
disk in, start the ripping process and walk away).

If the calculated disc IDs can't be verified against the original disc, then
yes, I'd tend to agree. I do this verification at the ripping stage, so in
general I'm happy that the ones I calculate are correct.
