The web server that is dishing out the content has a motherboard that
is starting to fail. The database server is well, as is the data, but
some things end up getting munged on the way out to the users.
I spent 7 hours at the data center today trying to rotate in the new
sun server, which would enable use to swap out the bad web server,
but for some reason the database running on the new server got
instantly overloaded and essentially could not deal with the traffic.
With Dave Evans approaching 3am in the UK and me exhausted, we
decided to go back to the old configuration until we could get our
head around the mysterious DB problem.
Only when we tried to bring the old configuration back up, we lost a
drive in the old database server's RAID-1 array. So, I fetched a
spare drive and for precaution sake took the site down while
rebuilding the array with a new drive. After that things came back up
into their less than optimal current state.
Tomorrow we'll start investigating why the new server is not doing
what it should and we'll do our best to swap out the bad machine ASAP.
Sorry for the hassles -- please bear with us!
P.S. If you're tagging your files, please consider using http://
www.uk.musicbrainz.org instead of the main server -- the UK mirror is
up to date and should be able to handle some traffic. Redirecting
traffic from the main server will make it easier for people who are
still working on the data get their job done.
