I don't have FF on mac, so I don't know if this applies to it, but anyway.

Does Mac Firefox have about:config? As in, when you write about:config 
in the browser address line and hit enter, it takes you to a page where 
you can tweak some of the "hidden" settings? If Mac version has it, you 
can probably change that behaviour from there. Look for 
accessibility.tabfocus[1], and modify it to your needs. Maybe it helps. 
Or I could have just misunderstood the whole issue altogether. :D
