It's not a matter of somebody removing it deliberately, it can happen by
accident or the alias configuration on the web server can easily be
removed.
I will repeat the advice given by numerous people already in this thread.
Unless you know exactly what you are doing and can read the minds of the
people administering the dns and web server configuration for a site,
don't change anything!
The long standing internet standard for web sites is to have www. at the
front. It is only in recent years that there is a tendency for it to be
dropped.
I've worked in the Internet industry (both as Senior Sys Admin for an ISP
and freelance consultant) for over 10 years. I've forgot the number of
times I've have to quickly adjust the configuration of a customer site
because they've printed thousands of adverts or business cards wrong!
Basically, if the URL works as it is, don't change it!
