I like Philip's opinions. I would however make the guidelines more
specific and I would require the site owner's permission even if we
use only a few images.
1. If we have explicit permission to use a sites cover art directly,
we can use it.
2. If we have the explicit permission to use a sites cover art but not
their bandwidth, we use archive.org
3. Cover art from community sites, where the community has placed
their content explicitly under an open license (e.g. Creative
Commons), can be used via archive.org.
4. Single artwork under open licenses can be used via archive.org
5. In all other cases we must ask for permission.
IMHO points 2-4 are valid uses of archive.org without any social
problems. If a community chooses to release their work under an open
license they expect (and must expect) their work to be used, and with
the license they give permission to do so.
One point about Creative Commons licenses: It's possible that they
can't always be used without problems. The "Attribution" licenses for
example require that you give proper credit when using that image.
Currently there is no way in MB to do that.
