If you're just talking about data you see and not recent edits then yes, there's a reason:
when ARs were introduced as a feature, a script run that would auto-add "performed" relationships for tracks that had "(feat. ...)" in them and where it could find a matching artist name (which is also the reason why many of them are attached to the wrong artist). There was a bit of uncertainty which would be the most appropriate general relationship for all featuring artists back then so "performed" instead of "guest performed" was used.
