[mb-users] The major label merge-athon.

Hi all,

http://wiki.musicbrainz.org/Label states that "An imprint is (strictly,
and nothing more than) a brand (and trademark) associated with the
marketing of sound recordings (an imprint is not a company)."
It is my current understanding that releases on MBz should be sorted
into *imprints*, rather than the current set of (arbitrary) national
branches of companies for things like Mecury, Island, Polydor (all
currently owned by UMG). For this reason, I am proposing to break my
previous habit of breaking labels up into national branches (as per
Discogs), and instead merging them into the overall name of the imprint.
The merging will mean that some release events will look a little odd
until disambiguatory comments are updated. "Polydor UK (UK releases
only)" will soon include all international branches of Polydor, for
example, so please bear with me, or - even better - help with this
project but tidying up any glaring "errors".
Being naturally disorganised, I'm starting with the ransom choice of
Island Records. Maybe I'll write a progress report if I can work out how
to set up a wikidoc. ;)
Hopefully these edits will make MBz a lot less prone to mis-filing of
label releases, and will eventually mean the hierarchy of major labels
is a lot easier to understand.
