No, you didn't miss a thing, Tracing back can help you to find the label 
but not always. My girlfriend recognizes labels from barcodes just by 
telling her the numbers. I don't no how she does that :-( . Perhaps it 
is related to the fact that she worked for 15 years in a record store.

For me it is also very easy to look up the labels in the database of our 
wholesaler, but even those guys aren't perfect. In time you recognize 
the distributors, the labels, the manufacturers and so on, It took me 
years and even then, one label in Holland, one in Germany, one in 
Belgium, one in the USA is making it even worse.

Our wholesaler gives EMI as the label BTW you can also try 
http://www.phononet.nl it is not very complete but they are accurate
