It's common for players to implement URL-based lookups but ignore
metadata-based lookups. I don't see it as any less incompatible to
implement metadata-based lookups and ignore URL-based lookups. I have
no idea why a developer would do that, given how easy and powerful it
is to support URLs, but I am happy to see any kind of progression
towards full-featured resolvers. It is legal, even if it's also
inscrutable.
We'll achieve something worthwhile in the end as long as there is an
ecosystem of co-evolving implementations.
