[Playlist] XSPF player feature question / request

I am working on some "modular" music with the idea that people will
be able to "assemble" their own albums using XSPF playlists.
Individuals can have multiple albums (multiple playlists), and will
be encouraged to share them with others.

Given this scenario, the music files may be available online, or will
be on an individual's local machine. What's the state of the art with
XSPF players being able to utilize local copies of files vs only
using online files / URLs?

I know a bit about musicbrainz MBIDs that I imagine I could somehow
get for each track and then use as part of the XSPF playlists. What
XSPF players are using MBIDs at this point?

Also, I imagine that some players might be capable of caching based
on public URLs, which they translate to a local ones (like Lucas' old
m3udo [1]). At least for my own music, I can create permalink URLs
for the files.

MBIDs seem cool, since I believe they are format independent. This
could allow the same playlist, for example, to work with either MP3
or FLAC format versions of any track.

But, what's the current state of the art with (local / remote /
multiple format capable playlists / players) / where are things
heading?

I am guessing someone is already working on something like this, but
my ideal scenario would be like:

1. user loads a XSPF playlist in their XSPF player

2. player shows a list of tracks with an indication of

	a. which tracks the user already has locally

[and, for the tracks that the user does not have locally:]

	b. which tracks are available online for free (or, that the user has
already paid for), that the player can download automatically

	c. which tracks can be downloaded once a fee is paid, and the price
(or price range, given multiple formats and/or multiple sources)

	d. which tracks can not be found online

3. once the user buys any tracks available online for a fee, the
player is able to download them

I could imagine a player like this working with services like cruXy,
which could create nice new distribution opportunities for recording
artists. . .

Any thoughts on what's out there now / things coming soon that might
fulfill this scenario?
